Second shooting is amazing for a myriad of reasons. Not only does it allow you to practice & hone your skills, but it allows you to network with other photographers & make some money without the pressure of booking your own weddings.
In this episode, Julie chats about the do’s & don’ts of second shooting. Here are some of our favorite points from this episode!
1. DO: NETWORK to build relationships with photographers you admire
DON’T ask random photographers to second shoot for them – they don’t know you
2. DO: Ask for feedback (and actually improve from it)
Don’t take it personally. Lead shooters don’t want to hear excuses.
3. DO: Dress nicely (if you want to be asked back). Ask the lead for their recommendation. When in doubt wear black (knee length dress, slacks and a nice top and nice comfortable shoes)
DON’T where sneakers or hats – unless you call the shots at your own wedding. If that’s what you do, you do you.
4. DO act professional at all times – upbeat, motivated and excited to be their and help
Don’t complain – especially about the couple, guests or day in anyway. You never know who is around and listening
5. DO pack water, snacks and a potential meal – just in case
Don’t get upset if you don’t get fed, if you get hungry when it’s not meal time or if you have dietary restrictions that limit what you can eat. Control the controllables.
6. DO be aware of what the lead shooter is shooting at all times.
DON’T double shoot what lead is shooting. Shoot a different angle, creatively or establishing venue or detail shots.
7. DO ask lead for day of expectations if it is your first time working with them
DON’T expect you can use the images – ask upfront what the lead shooter expectations of you are with the images
DO NOT EVER post images with tags – anybody from the wedding – couple, vendors, etc. That is never cool.
8. DO: Always introduce yourself when you walk into a room with new people so people know who you are – Hi, I’m Julie, with XX Photography. I will be with her/him all day – please let me know if there is anything I can photograph for you.
DO NOT NETWORK WITH VENDORS – You are not working as your company. You are working for someone else.

Long story short, second shooting is awesome. Don’t be scared of it! It’s like getting paid to be mentored by awesome photographers. Listen to feedback, dress & act professionally, and represent your lead photographer in a positive light, and you’ll have a great experience!
