Don’t you wish being a photographer was just like… taking photos of people? WE DO TOO. But, alas, it isn’t! SO much stuff goes on behind the scenes, and having a cohesive, eye-catching website isn’t JUST about the photos you use.
Writing website copy is TOUGH. You want to speak enough about yourself so potential clients can know a little bit about who you are and what you do, but you don’t want the whole thing to seem like one big 1990 style personal ad about yourself. So how do you go about bringing your personality into your brand & attracting your ideal clients with your website copy? Rachel Greiman of Green Chair Stories is here to help!
Here are some key takeaways from Rachel’s episode:
- Forget the “avatar.” Large companies like Coca Cola are going to have a bunch of different avatars of people that they’re marketing to, because they’re marketing to the masses. We, as photographers, don’t need that. We already have worked with our ideal client at least once (hopefully!), so we know exactly what type of person we want to attract. Rachel suggests thinking of your favorite client & instead of making up a fictitious “ideal client,” think about that client!
- Keep that one person in mind while you write your website copy. Talk to ONE person. A LOT of successful people market toward “you guys” but really, it’s not a great idea in general. You want to keep the meat of your website copy aimed at one person, so ideally the person reading it feels like you’re talking to them, and them alone.
- Call your client & interview them. Ask them why they booked you, what they liked about you, and use that to your advantage.
- Don’t fall for what’s trendy. You want to STAND OUT. So if you’re finding yourself looking at other people’s websites for inspiration, you might want to take a different route. If you look at enough photography websites, you’ll probably start to notice that a lot of them look the same! Of course great images will help you stand out, but a properly written website will do wonders!
